What is horticulture? As the photo above may suggest horticulture is the science of growing plants! Although plants can be quite beautiful in the big picture how do plants effect us? Why is it important at all that we know anything about them? Well.....
What are some things that happened as the trees started to disappear?
The Brown Bar-ba-loots had nothing to eat as their food was from the trees. The Swamee-Swams no longer could sing because of the smog that was created. And the water became dirty and the humming fish had to leave.
Without the trees and the plants nothing could survive.
This is true for us as people as well. Everything we eat in some way is connected to plants. The vegetables and fruits we eat are of course plants. The meat we eat comes from animals that eat plants. Even the air we breath is made possible because of plants!
Although this leaves a lot of questions unanswered.....
How do plants grow?
How do plants make clean air?
How can I be more involved in horticulture when I'm just a student?
As we continue to explore we will find out more!
