In the short video above we see Edward discover Dawn's accidental garden. As we have learned if you plant a seed in the ground and give it water and sunlight more times then not, it will grow.
We could compare a plant to us as humans in some ways. We as people need nutrients that we get from food, we drink water and we need to have vitamin D which we get from the sun. As people we eat and drink to get our nutrients through our mouths and we get sun by walking outside. But how do plants do this?
One way we can discover this simply is viewing the end of our short video. We see how the flower changes color after sitting in water with food coloring. Similar to the flowers below....

So how does this happen? Well one way to think about this is by comparing it to us. As humans our food is spread all through our body through blood vessels. This is in fact very similar to plants.

In the picture to the right you can see this white flower. The purple in this photo are actually the veins of the flower. The nutrients for the flower are collected by the roots and in some cases the pedals and are distributed through the flower through these veins.
Another large part of how plants grow is through a process called "Photosynthesis" This large simple is what breathing is for us. As people we breath in a gas called Oxygen out of the air. When all of the oxygen goes through our body we breath out a gas called Carbon dioxide. THIS is what plants breath in. Plants breath in Carbon Dioxide through openings in their leaves called "stomata".
As we learned in the video that when the plant takes in carbon dioxide and water and you add sunlight the plant produces sugar for the growth of the plant and oxygen which it puts back into the environment for you and I to breath.
We have now discovered how plants grow and how in the process they make fresh air, but to make a plant grow is hard work. As a class we will soon embark on a new journey to discover this. Stay tuned for next weeks post on our journey to Make plants grow.
